In the occasion of Artissima, the most international Italian art fair, OFF Giannoni & Santoni presents the most domestic project possible: a series of dazzling and quirky hen coops envisioned by Vedovamazzei and developed in collaboration with the world’s most “philosophical” egg producer, Paolo Parisi. There are twenty of them, and each one is a unique, handmade and unrepeatable piece of art. The hallmark of our chicken coops is the same as Vedovamazzei’s: irony. But it's a cultured, sophisticated irony, not just for the sake of it (sometimes, even melancholic). Each work sends significant messages from its very form, designed by Vedovamazzei to resemble a modern appliance, suggesting that, just like a fridge or a dishwasher, each of us should have a hen coop at home, whether on the terrace or in the backyard, in order to have fresh eggs every morning. In a world where intensive farming is rampant, we wanted to create the ideal living environment for hens, a sort of luxury villa. The key feature of a good hen coop is to let the hens feel secure, which is why they are all closable: this extraordinary and complex animal needs to be indoors at night to feel protected, just like us. So, enjoy yourself; you can decide whether to walk among the hens or choose to observe them from the outside, but is important to do it with respect and without disturbing them. And don’t ask yourself what they are because it can’t be said whether they are hen coops becoming pieces of art or pieces of art becoming hen coops. It’s like asking: which came first, the chicken or the egg?

The Hen Coops

NEW EGG chicken coops represent the possibility of creating an ideal living environment for the hen, an animal that is too often forced to live inside intensive farms in very high density conditions, dark spaces and devoid of any stimulation.

The meeting between the craftsmanship of the Giannoni & Santoni world, the artistic vision of Vedovamazzei, the expertise of a team of architects, and Paolo Parisi's profound knowledge of chickens has led to the conception of spaces in which aesthetics and functionality come together, capable of best responding to the needs and well-being of the animal, designed so that the hen feels comfortable, free and, above all, safe.

Each chicken coop is a unique handmade piece, whose wooden exterior presents messages with an ironic and political spirit representative of Vedovamazzei's art, capable of triggering a reflection on universal themes such as emigration, the home, the management of natural resources.

The prerogative of an excellent chicken coop is to make the chickens feel safe, which is why NEW EGG chicken coops are designed to be easily opened and closed. Hens - just like human beings - feel comfortable at night only if in a dark and closed environment (the interiors are made of stainless steel), while in the morning it will be sufficient to "open" the chicken coop built on several levels and leave the hen free to decide when - and above all if - to exit through an easily identifiable side door.

All surfaces are easily removable and washable. The upper door is the one that houses the nest, designed by a team of experts according to the latest parameters in the study of egg deposition.

To top it all off, Vedovamazzei has imagined an extraordinary design object: an egg cup in the shape of a chicken's foot, which, evoking the shapes of an ancient candelabra, underlines the sacredness of this ritual, as simple as it is extraordinary.
